Screening for Percussion and Flute
Needham Series
1985; 15:37 min.
Screening was written for a choreography by Peg Brightman of Choreo Dance Company, Cambridge, MA. The piece unfolds in a slow, contemplative tempo. In the composition's many silences, the tone color of the different instruments emerges with great clarity.
Screening is a collaboration between choreographer and composer. It was premiered in a 1986 New England Computer Arts Association concert presenting computer dance. The composition of both dance and music are based on the same computer program, Koenig's Project One score generator.
While the choreographer used computed events to guide dancers' improvisation of computed gestures, the composer transcribed the events for the instruments employed. Dance and music were created independently of each other.
